St Columbas Pool Update
This pool is still not available and therefore this week and possibly next week Introduction to club and Skills Development squads will be able to train at the Waterfront. There will be only two lanes available to these squads, so there is the potential for the pool to be very busy on Tuesday evening as Gold and Silver squads will also be training in the other two lanes.
The following will apply
Introduction to club will train between 6pm and 7pm and
Skills Development will train between 6pm and 7.30pm
19th Nov 11
St Columbas School pool update
The council are still awaiting parts for the filtration system. A reminder to those in Skills development and introduction to club that there is still two sessions at Port Glasgow pool and 1 at the Waterfront for both squads, and swimmers should take advantage of these sessions where possible. I am also at present speaking to the Waterfront to gain an extra lane on Tuesday evening so that training can take place there also, however this will be for a maximum of two weeks . I am with the head coach and other committee members also trying to gain further watertime for the future so when St Columba's pool closes down that there will be smooth transition for those who train at this facility.
I know that St Columbas pool is showing its age but with only 2 council pools withing Inverclyde area this puts a hugh strain on resouces and trying to meet the needs of a swimming club we will have to continue to use St Columba's until alternatives can be found.
Please keep visiting our web sites for futher updates

West District Success
Three swimmers from Inverclyde Amateur Swim Club recently took part in the West District Group 5 Championships which were held at the Citadel Leisure Complex in Ayr.
Euan MacDougall swam very well in Boys 13-14 age group 50m freestyle and 50m breaststroke finishing 23rd out of 35 swimmers gaining personal bests in both swims.
Ross McMath swam brilliantly making the final of 50m backstroke in boys 10 -12 age group and gaining a 2 second personal best. He finished with a bronze medal and swam faster again in the final. He also finished in the top 10 for his 100 Individual Medley with another 3 second personal best. This is a great achievement at West District level. He also swam really well in the 50m freestyle with yet another personal best finishing 17th out of 39 swimmers.
Calvin Wardell aged 10-12 years was at the bottom of his age group at 10 years old so to achieve the entry times required is in itself good. He swam well and achieved a personal best in his 50m fly. The experience of swimming this meet will stand him in good stead for the future. All the boys did their club proud!

Open Water swimming success.
Two local girls ventured out of the swimming pool to take part in Open Water Events on Saturday 20th August. Laura Atkinson (14) of Inverkip was participating in the annual Kilcreggan to Greenock Cross Clyde Swim, organised by Gourock Swimming Club Unfortunately weather conditions meant that the swim had to be re-routed to run alongside Greenock Esplanade. Laura completed the gruelling 2.2 mile challenge in an impressive time of 01:02:06, placing her 12th overall and first girl home. She also has raised just over £400 for Alzheimer Scotland On the same day fellow Inverclyde ASC team mate Eilidh Love (12) of Largs took part in the SASA West District Open Water Championship at Lock Eck near Dunoon. Eilidh was the youngest competitor in the Novice Class and won gold for the 1km event, which is swum without wetsuits. For anyone interested in taking part in similar events, Gillian’s Saltire Appeal will be holding their annual Cumbrae to Largs swim in September – so go ahead and get your entry in. She thought the final result of second against strong opposition reflected just how much progress the club has made in a few months. She said: “I was extremely proud of all the swimmers who participated.
“They have all been working hard in training and this showed on the day. The coaches need to take a great deal of the praise for this great result!”
Coach Alison Hemphill was also very excited by the performances put in by the team, many of whom got personal bests in their races even if they didn’t get placed.
She said: “We have started to see how the squad’s extra sessions on Sundays from 6 to 7pm are paying off. We’re using these sessions to work on race technique. Race starts and turns, some of the skills required at competition level to get that little bit more out of the swimmers, are the difference between winning or losing. We’re definitely helping our team maximize their potential.”
The friendly and sporting vocal support form parents and friends was noticed by the other clubs at the event. So was the singing of the new club chant and sung with great energy by the squad at the end of the meet.

Updated information on Club Membership fees for 2011/12
ACTION : ALL IASC PARENTS / CARERS
It’s that time of year again for renewing our Annual Membership.
Information on Scottish Swimming
This year Scottish Swimming have introduced a 2 tier membership system, consisting of swimmers and non-swimmers. The major change for parents of young swimmers is that there is now only one category of “swimmer” to which we align your child to, no longer relating to their age at a particular time of the year. Scottish Swimming have set their fee for “swimmers” at £33.

Additional Step for Parents and Carers of New Members : Joined in last 6 weeks : To Action
Parents and Carers who’s young swimmer have joined in the past few weeks, you will remember that I’ve forwarned that our Annual Membership was due for renewal. With this in mind, can you then please print off the attached Scottish Swimming Membership Form and complete this prior to paying your £50 annual membership fee. Don’t worry if you cannot fully complete, as I can assist on poolside. Also, I do have hard copies of this form should you have problems printing.
I’d like to close by thanking all parents on a prompt action with paying membership. Unfortunately the timeline we follow incorporating Scottish Swimmings AGM (where fees are agree), IASC AGM (where our fees are agreed) and the closing date of Scottish Swimming membership renewal, is very tight.
I must conclude by advising that membership renewal not received by close of Sunday evening the 20th of March will result in membership being lapsed.

Thanks for your co-operation, and regards,

Inverclyde ASC would like to say thank you
Over the last two years Inverclyde ASC have received two grants of £500 from the Daily Record Sporting Heroes of the future programme been funded by Strathmore Spring Water.
This has allowed in the first year to buy starting equipment. This equipment has incorporated a starting light this allows those swimmers who are hard of hearing to compete on starting with others. This equipment has been used by the club on many occasions during time trails and the club championship. The starter also allows swimmers to get used to starting in a competitive environment and has allowed Inverclyde ASC to better prepare young swimmers for completion. In the same year Medicine balls were also purchased with the grant these have been put to great use during land training.
This year due to the grant new stop watches have been purchased these will replace old items and will assist in enhancing the performance of our swimmers along with the stop watches a number of swimmers paddles have been ordered, these are an invaluable training aid to our young swimmers.
At present Inverclyde ASC has over 120 members many of them competing in competitions over the West of Scotland and this year one member qualified for Scottish National event.
Inverclyde ASC would like to thank the Daily Record and Strathmore Spring Water through its Sporting Heroes of the Futures programme for supporting us in developing our young swimmers

Types of Swimming events
A) Open meets
Many clubs, hold open meets during the season. Age groups for these meets are usually from 11 years and upwards. A swimmers age is normally taken as the age on day of meet. The Clubs hosting the meet will normally publish consideration times for all events in each age group, and IASC will submit entries for swimmers based on the swimmers personal best times (PBs). The coaches have the final say as to which swimmers should be entered for any particular events, and may decide that, in certain circumstances, an entry may not be beneficial for a particular swimmer.
B)Mini Meets
These are similar to Open Meets, but are for swimmers in the younger age groups, often from 8 and under to 12 years. Age groups for these meets are often based on 'age on the day',
C)Graded Meets
These are meets, used to encourage swimmers of moderate ability, by ensuring that the standards of entry are similar. This is achieved by publishing time bands - swimmers entered must achieve times between the published maximum and minimum times for each event. Any entrant who swims more than 5% faster than the minimum time will be disqualified.
D)Development Meets
These could be run in the same way as graded meets, but are generally to help swimmers improve in a competitive situation.
Entries
The Club receives details of meets from other clubs and the coaches will decide whether the Club will attend. Entry forms and gala details are issued to each swimmer to be returned to gala secretary by a specific date. . The host club will accept not all entries submitted. Accepted entries will be posted to swimmer and put on the notice boards. It can take up to three or four weeks for this information to get back to the Club.
Entry Fees
For most invitational galas the entry fee is currently between £3.50 and £5.00 per swim. It could cost up to £20.00 if a swimmer is accepted for four events at a meet. The treasurer or the should be paid before the meet. It is very important that anyone not available for a meet should inform the secretary as soon as possible.
Age
Mostly a Swimmers age is taken as the age on the day of the meet
Personal Best times
A list of all swimmers current PB's is maintained and updated during the season, using times recorded at meets in which the club participates. Swimmers and parents should be aware of these times and discuss any discrepancies with the records convenor.
Consideration Time
This is the maximum time for an event that will be considered by the organisers of a gala. However, achieving the consideration time does not guarantee acceptance of the entry. The number and quality of other entries will determine this.
West District Age Group Championships
These are held over several weekends between March and May at various pools in the District - usually Ayr, Bellshill, Larkhall and Cumbernauld. The organisation of the Championships may vary from year to year. The Club makes entries for all swimmers making the consideration times for each event. consideration times for that event. For the distance events the number of accepted entries may be reduced. The fastest 36 entries for each event will be accepted direct to the Championships, so swimmers who have made consideration times may not have their entries accepted. The Championship rules may change from year to year, as above. Swimmers should watch the notice boards for published consideration times. If they wish to ensure that they are entered (or not entered!) for a particular event, they should discuss it with their coach. Otherwise, the Club will make entries based on the coach's estimate of the swimmers abilities. The entry fees for the championships are normally £3.50 per event. If a swimmer is not on poolside when the 'posting box' for entries closes, his/her entry card will not be posted. If a card is posted and the swimmer does not swim, the Club is fined £10.00 and this fine will be passed on to the swimmer. The club is also fined if a swimmer does not make the consideration time in his/her event, but the Club pays this since the coaches are responsible for the entries.
Scottish Age Group Championship
This is normally swum over four days, from the last Thursday in June. It is a long course meet and age groups are from 12 years to Open (16 and over). Consideration times are published at the end of the preceding calendar year. Achieving these times should be the goal of every swimmer, but the times are hard and 'qualifying for the Scottish' is an achievement in itself. Please note that adjustments have to be made to times swum in 25 metre pools to give long course equivalent times. This is done using tables, and the long course times are slightly slower. The Club pays part of all Scottish entry fees. The Club does not normally organise transport to any of the above invitation/individual meets.
League Galas
There are two leagues, the Clyde Coast Winter League and Mini League. The Club enters teams in each of these leagues each year. The leagues are of varying standard and cover an assortment of age groups. Team selection is based on the standard required for each league. Most swimmers from Top squad and/or transitional as well as some from Skills Development Squads will be selected for at least one team during the year. Each league team will normally swim four matches in a season, one home and three away. Team selection, and venue will be posted on notice boards for each meet, as will the results. For home matches parents are asked to provide cakes and sandwiches for the parents, officials and coaches of visiting clubs. Swimmers are served juice and crisps, provided by the Club. A bus is provided for away matches. Swimmers are encouraged to use the bus, so that they travel and arrive as a team. Parents are welcome to travel on all buses provided by the Club. If a swimmer fails to notify his/her coach that they will not attend a league match he/she will be fined £5.00. If this occurs frequently, he/she will not be allowed to swim for the Club.
Club Championships
These are normally held over the months of October November and December, and are open to all squad swimmers. Events are 'heat declared winner'.
